THE ART OF THE THEATRE-THEATRE 100

Avant-garde and Traditional Theatre

According to Robert (2018) “avant-garde is a style of art that constitutes anything that intentionally goes against the expectations of the audience.” The art is uncanny and unexpected. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical starts, with Ethan Slater urging the audience to come on while stating their middle name, the performers move on to the next lyrics as we wait to hear their middle name. The lyrics are rhythmical but do not make any logical sense at the beginning. It is quite difficult to follow and understand the sequence of the story however after including several unrelated lyrics the performers then go ahead and mention the middle name which we have been looking forward to hearing from the start of the performance.

The performance becomes exciting but irritating because it does not form a logical sequence, it is however captivating as the audience looks forward to the next part of the performance. Additionally, the performers are not dressed to a certain theme in the play, the audience attempts to place the performers’ wardrobe to a certain theme which is very difficult as every performer appears with a different costume that is unrelated to the other performers. There seems to have been an attempt to create a stage that resembles the sea but this is still not completely clear as there are also settings that would typically not be found in the sea.

However, the play meets the audience’s expectations when the performers tell a story about the sponge and attempt to describe some of its characters. It also brings out the aspect of traditional theatre when the description of Squidward follows a logical sequence although it is still uncanny and confusing. The play also attempts to follow the aspect of traditional theatre at the very end where the performers summarise the play by explaining the kind of day in Bikini Bottom the play portrayed. The explanation is however still not logical.
