During the riot of April 29, 1992, a majority of the damages were suffered by members of other minority communities. A black gang member, in response to the huge losses suffered, was quoted making references to the Asian community, showing there is a divide between minority ethnicities in the US. Some ethnic groups that immigrated to America were given white status. Examples of these groups include the Irish and Jews. The Irish arrival in America coincided with the arrival of the Chinese (Takaki, 2018). However, the Irish were considered white due to the Naturalization Law of 1790 (Takaki, 2018). The Naturalization Law of 1790, which considered other ethnic groups as non-white and therefore second-class citizens, allowed better opportunities for the Irish. The groups that were excluded from these naturalization laws still suffer from several discriminations that see to it that they still experience challenges that hinder their progress in society.
Being liminal means removing oneself from an ongoing experience and occupying a position on the edges of the society in which one exists. Different minority groups with different ethnicities experience varying liminalities. Compared to groups like African Americans and Latinos, those accepted as white benefited more from this acceptance. Race is a social construct, and for the longest time, one was either white or black (Takaki, 2018). This resulted in different ethnicities with different cultures, practices, and languages being jammed together because they had similar skin colour (Takaki, 2018). Those with the advantage of being labelled as “white,” such as the Jewish and Irish, can assimilate, while their counterparts, like African Americans or Asians, have to overcome systematic discrimination, which only serves to push back their development and absorption into the community.
