INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY-PHIL 101

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave

Plato is one of the greatest thinker and philosopher of all time, he came up with a classical philosophical thought aimed at probing our intuitions about epistemology (Finnigan et al., 2019). In his experiment, he depicts a group of prisoners restrained in a cave, such that they cannot move and can only see shadows of people and objects reflected by their shadows on a wall. The prisoners get used to the shadows and the deem lighting of the cave and begin naming objects that were casted by the shadows on the wall.

Plato gave an insight about glasses when one of the prisoners is freed and comes outside the cave for the first time, he is unable to see and sunlight hurts his eyes (Finnigan et al., 2019). He was more familiar with the shadows of objects rather than the real object since the reflections are clearer to him as compared to the objects but with time he got used to the objects and can now see them. Similarly, people with eye problems find difficulties to see but once they get used to the glasses they begin to see the objects clearly. In our case, the prisoner goes back to the cave to share his discovery with others, but found it difficult to see the shadows as he is already used to the light and the real objects. It explains why it is difficult to see clearly for people who are already used to glasses when they remove it they see blurred vision.

The allegory of the cave reminds me of life time experience, where I was asked to name the shape of the earth, I answered the shape of the earth as flat because that is how I perceived it. The teacher took me to amusement as he tried to explain the shape of the earth being round or oblate spheroid. I found it hard to understand how people exist and settle on the earth surface since I used to believe that we lived inside the earth. In my opinion, wide reading and research is the best way of dealing with differences in perception.
