Baroque Era was the period that followed the Renaissance era, and it is the period that music was heavily ornamented, change of musical notation, creation of tonality and introduction of new instrumental playing techniques. I think this period was a historical moment which was full of a new exploration of musical ideas and innovations. The period had great artists, literature and philosophers who led to the “expansion of the size, range and complexity of the instrumental performance” (Baroque music, 2019, May 18). Most of the music composers and performers liked “decorative” music with melodic parts. The Baroque style of music came with monophonic, homophonic and polyphonic as the main musical textures. The new musical genres that developed during the Baroque Era were opera, sonata, oratorio, cantata and concerto. The features of the Baroque music included the use of terrassed dynamics, loud or soft. The prevalence of mood or affection, the establishment of the diatonic chords, major or minor key system. Baroque orchestra and “Basso continuo” a continuous base technique, became popular in this era. The period was experienced more invented string instruments- Violin, Cello, Mandolin, Harp, Lute, Contrabass and Hurdy-gurdy. Woodwind instruments- Bassoon, Baroque flute, Recorder, Clarinet, Musette de cour, Chalumeau and Rackett. Brasses instrument- Baroque trumpet, Serpent, Trombone and Sackbut. Percussion instrument- Baroque timpani, Tenor drum, Castanets and Tambourine. The types of keyboards established in the Baroque Era were Clavichord, Organ, Fortepiano, Tangent piano and Harpsichord. Some of the remarkable music composers during the Baroque Era included Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Henry Purcell, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Claudio Monteverdi, ean-Philippe Rameau, Johann Pachelbel, George Frideric Handel among others. Most of them were from Europe and some migrated to America such as Manfred Bukofzer and Suzanne Clercx-Lejeune. Baroque music spread to Latin America and the idea of Ornamentation of music became popular as most musicians stared manipulating melodic material. Therefore, music became “more lively and less technically complex in a Latin American context than it was in Europe” (Baroque music, 2019, May 18). Did you know the Baroque Era was also known as “ROCOCO.”
