According to David A. Ridenour, the United States should withdraw from the WHO. He criticizes WHO’s management of the H1N1, Ebola, and COVID-19 pandemics, blaming them for being too ineffective, lacking transparency, and prioritizing economic interests over public health. Ridenour insists that the U.S. withdrawing from the WHO will provide the country with the opportunity to push for the substantial restructuring of the organization, such as giving the WHO the power to “name and shame” countries risking global health (CQ Researcher 67).
However, Carolyn Reynolds opposes the U.S. pulling out from the WHO. She stresses the huge value of WHO in clinical and research activities. Furthermore, it is very well known for its coordination of global response to pandemics, research for vaccines and treatment for infectious diseases, and even polio and Ebola eradication efforts (CQ Researcher 67). Reynolds argues that if the U.S. leaves, it will weaken America’s influence, undermine the global contagious disease early warning system, and make Americans less safe because of the nature of no country being safe until the pandemic is controlled globally.
In my view, the WHO undoubtedly has a space for development in its pandemic management, and it would be inappropriate to withdraw from it for the U.S. and the world’s security and health. The WHO performs the critical coordinating role that no organization can do as quickly and effectively as it can. Overall, the World Health Organization should be dealt with from within to reform and strengthen it while maintaining U.S. financial and political support, which seems more pragmatic than giving up on it altogether. Working through multilateral organizations like the WHO is important to find global solutions to problems like pandemics, which do not recognize national boundaries. An organization that offers a comprehensive approach to solving global issues like the WHO should never be abandoned but needs support from all countries to promote their services more.
