I did not make it to attend AI Conference in person because I come from China but I had a good opportunity to follow the proceeding online via Zoom. I would have liked to see the technology exhibits presented at Appreciation Hall by the organizers but all in all, I learned a lot from the panels. The first panel was led by Angel Evan and I heard him mentioning that he is the Director and Instructor Business and Technology Curriculum at Stanford Continuing Studies. The topic of his presentation was The Ethical Framework: Six Principles that Govern Decision-making in AI. In summary, Angel helped me learn that the Six Principles that govern decision-making in AI are transparency, accountability, fairness, reliability and safety, inclusiveness, and privacy and security. Angel emphasized the importance of creating responsible and trustworthy AI system but this can be achieved if we consider ethics.
According to Angel, the people who designed the AI system should be accountable for its actions. Even after most organizations rushed to deploy the AI system in their companies, it is important to provide guidance on using it. Another thing I learned is AI system should not discriminate anybody irrespective of their gender or sexual orientation. It should consider all races and empower everyone and consider addressing all experiences. This point brought the idea of fairness, one of the major principle of ethics. Angel also believe that AI system should be secure, reliable, and safe. People need to trust a system that is transparent and ready to perform in different regions and situations. All data in the AI system should be protected. I agree with the presenter that privacy and security are crucial things in AI systems. Angel concluded by mentioning that institutions should advise students on best ethical practices when it comes to technology use. The second panel took place in the afternoon and was led by several important individuals invited to the college. We have Diane M. Korngiebel whose presentation was about AI applications: the hazards of taking BIG steps with little ethics. She emphasized on the importance of ethics when it comes to technology applications especially using AI system. As a principal investigator in Big Data, Diane made us believe that the AI system is facing some ethical challenges including a lack of transparency in data gathering. According to her, not all AI decisions are intelligible to humans and it also makes me believe that AI system can be susceptible to inaccuracies. Gia Paige was the second presenter on this panel and she was interested to talk about responsible innovation. She also targeted the AI system and emphasized on the ethical perspective of fairness in whatever products technology comes with. Gia called for improving the fairness of AI tools. The third presenter was Scott Robson and his theme was Stories That Can Change You: Building Ethics through Narratives. He also emphasized on the importance of ethics and as an experienced editor, he mentioned how he likes focusing on stories that can help people define good morals. Scot believes technology like AI system should play a role in promoting ethics. So, let the system set a good example to users. Overall, the conference was very productive for me because it enabled me to understand AI ethics. Thank you the organizers especially the F
